the nature of the sky

the trouble with clouds
is that they are not really
bunnies or dragons
or big balls of cotton

at a distance
when you are safe to see them that way
they give you comfort

but when you draw near enough to see
what really is
they are just cold steam
on a wind
that would not care
if you fell to your death

and that is the nature of the sky.
