Congratulations, NASA
Nice trick shot with the Deep Impact mission. I am suitably impressed. I hope we get some good data from this mission.
Today is July 4th, 2005...a day to celebrate in the United States the concepts of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A day for the rest of the world to cringe in trepidation as we lurch about like a somewhat inebriated bully at a party, punching people out as befits our mood, but no one else is big enough to ask us to leave the room or even make us feel like we are doing wrong.
We are drunk on our arrogance. I have no doubt but that, in time, we'll awake from this stupor...but in the interim we are killing more than just our reputation, more than just our young men and women...I heard an extraordinarily hypocritical speech the other day from someone who should know better, someone who wanted us to believe that we are overseas, fighting the wrong guys, causing tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of collateral casualties (that's crapspeak for innocents) we are holding their lives as sacred as our own.
C'mon guys, you may have the power to force your will on the peoples of the worlds, as any good dicactor with a military budget can, but you wrap a turd in flag or Bible and it still smells as bad. This era will not be well regarded in histories, it will be a time of shame and pity, if the world makes it through our provocations and foolishness.
Be honest, at least.
